For all those who are new to this (new) Forum - I've been building a database of all those soldiers, nurses, munitions workers etc that married overseas during the war years. (1914 - 1920) I'd be extremely grateful to anyone who can provide me with any details that may help in this project.  Steve, Bill & a few others have been doing a wonderful job of supplying me with Light Horse men over the last year or so (unfortunately the original thread from the previous forum has been lost) - however, the process continues.............

Steve - these are the last lot of names that I copied that are yet to be added to my database:

Hi Steve

Didn't yet have any of the huge list of  "Ws" above - and the 2 Freemans & Chambers are new too.
Looks like I'm going to have to get side-tracked back onto getting the database up to date with all these.

Thanks again, Frev

My grandfather, Robert Muir, married in Scotland after WW!.  Do you have details on your database?  Do you need any information?

Sue & Steve

I do already have Robert Muir in the database. (876, 2nd LH)
Born c1884 Yetholm, Roxburghshire, Scotland – son of John (a Carrier) & Mary
Enlisted Ayr, Qld
Embarked Port Said 28/3/19 on Malwa for Taranto – for 1 months furlo in UK
Married Annie Ford 6/5/1919 in Roxburgh, Scotland (Annie, aged 35, was a Domestic Servant in Ewell, Surrey)
Returned together on the Windhuk 19/6/19 – 21/8/19 NSW (disch Qld)
Applied for assistance under the War Services Homes Act in 1925 NSW
Died in 1975 in NSW

Sue – I’d be very interested in the following details if you know any of them & would like to share:

When your grandfather first came to Australia & whether he & your grandmother were already ‘an item’ at the time
How many children they had
Whether I have found the correct death registration for your grandfather
When & where your grandmother passed away
Where your grandparents are buried

Cheers, Frev

g'day Frev

loved the wedding photo's------------hangover?

anyhow my grandfather was married in England after the war--came home with new bride. It is a good story.
Imagine mother with 3 daughters in Islington London, (father flew the coup to USA), Mother tells daughters, "whatever you do stay away from those Australian soldiers!"--------grandfather wounded at Bullecourt---hospitalised in England--meets Florence (youngest daughter), marries in 1919, sails home with her---lands melbourne, train to Wodonga, train to Tallangatta, horse and buggy to farm, a days travel, so after 3 days arrives at farm, no running water, no electric lamp etc----raises 9 kids, two die at birth, she lives to ripe age (l remember her dearly), Dave dies the day l was born.

subsequent story--l interviewed Flo's sisters in 1992---two remaining daughters take off to USA to find father--finds him gets money to send home--tells him to bugger off for good!  --they meet 2 german immigrants working for henry ford--marry them and stay on in the USA----Emile and joe become photographers and take tours back to germany where Joe was arrested and beaten up by the Nazis in 1930 something for abusing herr hitler at an outdoor meeting--l interviewed joe also in 1992 before he died--joe becomes honorary Navaho for his photographic work recording their life-----

oh--Dave Swasbrick 13th Bn 4AIF, marries Florence Porter 1919------apparently mother-in-law came out to see her darling Flo--was horrified but not enough to make another trip out before she died.
any bits missing? or if you need some added details l can ask eldest daughter now 91---
cheers
richard

Hi Richard - no, no hangover - designated driver I'm afraid!  But still had a brilliant time.

Looks like I'm not the only one suffering with 'old timers' disease though (remember the bit about the camera!  Roll Eyes).....you see, you already told me the story of your grandfather in Canberra a couple of years ago.  But love the extra story on his sisters-in-law. Their poor old mum must have been beside herself!

Hi Frev

In reply to your email, my grandfather, Robert Muir (b 12/1/1884), left London 28/6/07, arriving in Brisbane 15/8/07.  He then went to work in the canefields in north Qld.  He met my grandmother, Annie Ford, in London when he was on leave after falling ill at Gallipoli.  They only met the once and then corresponded for the rest of the war, meeting again after the war finished when he travelled to London from Egypt.  They had 2 children, 1 girl (b 1921) who died soon after birth and my father, Robert Muir (b 11/11/22).  My grandfather died 13/11/1975 in Sydney.  He donated his body to the Sydney University.  Annie died 2/5/1980 in Sydney and her ashes were scattered in her garden in Dee Why.
Best wishes

Thanks so much for the extra details on your grandparents Sue.  I was thinking it would have been a 'whirlwind' marriage if they'd only met after the war!
Fascinating that your grandfather donated his body to the Uni - obviously a very far-sighted man.
I'll add these details to my database, which will be very helpful for both their story, and the overall picture of war marriages.
